Kota Kinabalu: More than 200 darters took part in the 9th International Sabah Open Darts Championship that began at the Kota Kinabalu Community centre on Friday.
The team event saw 40 teams from countries such as Singapore, Philippines, Brunei and states like Sarawak, Selangor, Perak, Kuala Lumpur and Labuan as well as some of the districts throughout Sabah participating while the individual events also drew in 250 men and 32 women.
Mayor of Kota Kinabalu, Datuk Abidin Madingkir in his opening speech said the sport plays a very important role to foster goodwill and friendship among the participants, and at the same time promoting tourism between the participating countries and states.
"I also believe that sports like darts can promote a healthy lifestyle, both mentally and physically among the communities and I hope that this event can also help to tap talents, which will enable them to participate in other bigger tournaments both nationals and internationals in the future."
Abidin said with the overwhelming support from the sponsors, the organisers are able to offer cash prizes totalling RM7,000 plus trophy for the team champion, and RM3,000 plus trophy for the runner-up.

He added that the men's singles champion will receive a cash prize of RM1,200 plus trophy while the women's singles champion set to collect cash prizes RM600 plus trophy.
He thanked the sponsors, Makamewah Sdn Bhd, Everise Ventures Sdn.
